Why Self-Hosted Email Matters in 2026
South African businesses learnt the hard way this week — one of the country's largest hosted email providers went down and thousands of companies could not send or receive mail for hours. Every Beathan-hosted client kept sending and receiving normally, because their mailboxes do not sit on shared multi-tenant infrastructure that fails for everyone at once.
We built our own mail server software from the ground up and deploy it on dedicated self-hosted and VPS instances. For South African clients, the server sits on local SA infrastructure for sub-20ms IMAP/SMTP latency. For international clients in the EU, United States or Australia, we provision the server in the region closest to their offices so Outlook, Apple Mail and mobile clients sync at native speed regardless of where the business is based.
Each mailbox ships with 1TB of storage by default — enough that most users never need to archive or delete. Need more? We simply expand the volume; you only pay for the extra capacity. There are no per-feature upsells, no "premium" tiers hiding calendar sharing or shared mailboxes, and no surprise overage bills.
Pricing is straightforward: a hosting fee for the dedicated server + R500 for a 10-user bundle. Add users in blocks as the team grows. Because we own the platform top to bottom we can also enforce custom routing rules, build bespoke filters, integrate with your ERP and supply unlimited aliases on your domain — things the big SaaS platforms charge premium licences for.
