    Business data backup and recoveryBackups

We set up backups for your servers, PCs and virtual machines, and we restore from them when something goes wrong, including after ransomware.

    TL;DR — Quick Summary

Beathan Technologies sets up data backups for businesses and restores from them when it matters. We back up servers, PCs and virtual machines using rsync and tools we built ourselves, and on Incus we copy virtual machines while they are running. When a client's laptop was hit by ransomware, we showed them their backed-up data, they confirmed it was complete, and we wiped the laptop, reinstalled Windows 11 and restored everything.

    • Servers, PCs, laptops and virtual machines
    • Built with rsync and tools we developed ourselves
    • Running virtual machines copied with no downtime
    • A laptop recovered after ransomware, with every file checked by the client first

What does ransomware recovery look like?

Here is how one recovery went, for a client whose laptop was encrypted by ransomware.

    1. 1We showed the client the copy of their data we held, before touching the laptop.
    2. 2They went through it and confirmed everything was there and correct.
    3. 3We wiped the laptop completely and reinstalled Windows 11, so nothing of the ransomware was left behind.
    4. 4We restored all of their data to the clean laptop.

The order matters. Confirming the backup first meant the client knew their files were safe before anything was erased, and wiping the machine instead of trying to clean it meant the ransomware had nowhere to hide.

    What do we back up?

We use rsync and tools we developed ourselves, set up around what your data is, how often it changes and how quickly you would need it back.

    Servers

File servers, application servers and the data on them, copied on a schedule that matches how often it changes.

    PCs and laptops

The files people work on every day, so a stolen laptop or a dead drive is an inconvenience instead of a loss.

    Virtual machines

On Incus we copy machines while they are running, so live data is backed up without anyone stopping work.

Backup for small business: five questions to ask

Whoever looks after your backups, including us, should be able to answer these without looking anything up.

    • What exactly is being backed up, and what is not?
    • Where does the copy live? A backup on the same machine, or in the same room, goes down with it.
    • How far back can you go? Ransomware can sit unnoticed for days, so last night's copy may already be affected.
    • How long would a full restore take, and who would do it?
    • When did someone last restore from it to prove it works?
